"Al – Gharb” ( the west )  is what the Moors called the most southern Province of Portugal. In their eyes the most westerly province of the Islamic empire. After 500 years of Moorish rule the Al – Gharb was conquered from the Moors by king Alfonso 3rd  in the 13th century. He therefore became king of Portugal and the Algarve.

The Algarve stretches for approx. 155km from the river Guadiana on the Spanish border to the Cabo de São Vicente near Sages in the west and is approx. 50km wide.

The Algarve has preserved its own distinctive character and is very different in climate, culture and scenery to the rest of Portugal.

Due to its mild climate in winter and many days of sunshine during the year, it has become a very sought after holiday region right throughout the year. Offering many attractions for the most discerning tourists.
